Protection Against Pregnancy Complication

Pregnancy marks an exciting new chapter in life. And just like every loving parent, we understand how you would want only the best for your child. Yet, while you are busy preparing for your baby's arrival with ample nourishment and newborn necessities, one question stands out above others: Have you ensured that you and your baby receive adequate financial protection during your pregnancy and beyond?A comprehensive prenatal insurance and savings plan should provide protection for expectant mothers from around 4 - 8 months into pregnancy and even extends to cover your baby after he is born. This means you will enjoy greater peace of mind, knowing that financial assistance is at hand should the unexpected happen during pregnancy or after childbirth. In addition, the savings aspect of this plan helps ensure that your child receives a head start in planning towards a financially secure future as soon as he is born.

Medisave Grant for Newborns

Source: Medisave Grant for Newborns

Introduction to Medisave Grant

All Singaporean children born on or after 26 August 2012 are eligible for a Medisave grant of $3,000 in their Medisave Account, which will be given in two equal tranches. The first $1,500 will be deposited in your child's CPF Medisave Account about two to three months after registration of birth, and the remaining $1,500 will be deposited a year later if your child continues to be enrolled in MediShield or a Medisave-approved Integrated Shield Plan.

Uses of Medisave Grant

This grant can help parents defray the costs of your child's hospitalization and certain approved outpatient treatment expenses incurred at any participating restructured or private hospitals in Singapore. In another hand, a congenital anomalies (Common examples include a cleft palate, hole in the heart and Down's syndrome.) requiring long-term medical treatment could cause a huge bill. As the Medisave grant for newborns is meant to support basic healthcare expenses and the use of Medisave is subjected to withdrawal limits, using the grant to fund the expensive medical cost will deplete the child's Medisave account quickly.Source:http://mycpf.cpf.gov.sg/CPF/my-cpf/have-child/HC3.htm

Saving for Education - Financial Planning

Source: Saving for Education

Introduction to Saving For Education

Before your child even starts school, you would probably have spent a small fortune on many childcare programmes. This may continue into his/her primary and secondary school days, depending on his/her enthusiasm and persistence, as well as your pocket. Of course, when your child enters university, you have to fork out another big fortune on his tuition.

Financial Planning - Why Save For Education?

In Singapore, tuition fees at the three universities are currently about $8,000 to $15,000 per year (except for dentistry and medicine courses that are much more expensive). When it is your child's turn to enter university, this sum could have ballooned, with inflation and rises in fees. And if you send your child overseas, the bill, including school fees, living costs, air fares and other expenses, could easily amount to more than $70,000 a year.
Some parents regularly put aside a sum for their children's education, either into a savings account or an insurance plan. Others expect to rely on their CPF savings which can be withdrawn under the Education Scheme. However, note that CPF funds can only be used for local studies and have to be repaid with interest within 10 years. And there's also a risk if you can't sustain the saving due to unexpected incident like loss job, accident, huge medical bill.
How are you going to support your child? Want to consider insurance, but do you know how? Following article will help you understand an insurance plan for your child in no time.

Financial Planning - What's An Education Saving Plan?

It appears that these days, "insuring" the children's education is very necessary for many parents. An education Saving Plan is essentially an endowment plan better to put money into the Saving account of Bank, where the owner pays premiums for the term of the policy, which may be from only five years, and receives a lump sum at maturity. Some of the policies pay out a sum of money once every few years, for example five years. This payment comes in handy if you require some funds during the term of the policy, eg, if you want to send your child for those extra courses (piano, computer, etc).

Affordable Medical Insurance

There are some affordable medical insurances (Premium as low as 200-300 SGD per year deducted from CPF) that can help to cover a portion of the medical expenses ( Up to unlimited amount per lifetime) when the need arises. The use of the child's Medisave grant for Integrated Shield Insurance is subject to each family's own decision. However, we encourage parents to purchase Approved Integrated Shield Insurance for their children if such coverage is suitable for their family's needs and situation.

Baby Bumps on Head

Source: Baby Bumps on Head

When your child starts to learn to walk, "goose egg" on head may then become common. A bump on the head can look very scary, especially to the adult who were looking after the baby while injury occurred. Luckily, thanks to the structure of our human brain, most of these falls will only cause minor injury to the scalp in the form of a bump and will not affect the brain of the children; eventually the bump will also disappear after some time

Head Injury - When you should call the doctor immediately

In the following situations, parents or caretakers are advised to seek doctor's help right away:
  1. Loss of consciousness. If your child becomes unconscious after a fall, this means damage to the head is very serious and you should call the ambulance or doctor immediately and ask the doctor for immediate instruction while you are waiting for ambulance to arrive. Usually you may need to apply CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) until help arrives.
  2. Severe headache. If your child complaints about severe headache after a fall, then you should take him or her to see doctor immediately.
  3. Persistent Vomiting. This is a sign of concussion. One or two times of vomiting may not indicate a serious injury, but if the child vomits three times or more than that, you should call the doctor immediately.
  4. Unusual eye movement or change in pupil size. This is a sign of possible brain injury.
  5. Loss of balance while walking. Dizziness after a fall is expected, but if the affected child repeatedly loses balance while walking or runs into things while walking, then you should take him or her to see doctor for further examination.
  6. Prolonged crying. This may indicate internal injury such as bleeding.
  7. 7. Bleeding that cannot be stopped with pressure.

Head Injury - What to do immediately?

If the above situations do not apply, then you should remain relaxed and do the followings:
  1. Apply the ice. If your child allows, gently hold an ice pack to the bump on your child's head. This can help to decrease the size of the bump.
  2. Stop the bleeding.Apply gentle pressure to stop the bleeding using a cloth.
  3. Monitor the child in the next 12 hours for the following:
    • Most of the child will retreat into sleep after a fall. You should do a partial arousal at an interval of one hour while your baby is sleeping. If your baby fusses or thrashes around to resettle, or wakes up, then it means that he or she is fine and you should just let your baby continue to sleep. Otherwise, you should seek doctor's help as soon as possible.
    • Monitor the change in color of affected area or face. If the face change color to pale, or even blue, medical attention should be needed immediately.

Head Injury - How to prevent a fall or head injury?

  1. Cushion sharp corners. There are inexpensive accessories that can help to cushion sharp corner on your coffee table, TV console, or dinning table and they can be easily bought from any kid's stores.
  2. Lower your child's mattress as soon as he starts standing up in his crib or bed. Most of the baby beds should allow you to lower down the position of the mattress. All you need to do is to lower down the position of some screws. Do contact the bed's manufacturer if you are not sure what to do.
  3. Do not leave your child alone on or in the furniture.
  4. When your floor is wet, do not allow your child to move around. If he is running or walking on the wet floor, it is very likely he or she may slip and hit his or her head.
  5. While at playground, monitor your child closely, especially if there are older children who are running around. They may bump onto your child at any time.

Interview a maid-Sample Questions

Interviewing a maid is probably the most important step in selecting a good maid. Through the interview, you may be able to tell whether the maid can communicate with you using English, whether she has the right set of skills to work for you and whether she is motivated to work as a domestic helper. You can also find out some other information that will be crucial for you to make a decision.
Below are some sample questions. After each questions, we also try to provide the rational for the question.

Motivation Related Questions - Interview a Maid

  • Why you want to work in Singapore? (Motivation related question)
  • Why you want to transfer? (For transfer maid)
  • Why you want to work as a domestic helper? (Motivation related)
  • Do you need to remit money back home monthly? (If yes, it could mean she needs money and may therefore be more motivated and focused to work)
  • Do you need to support your family financially? (same as point 4)

Skills and Experience - Interview a Maid

  • What can you cook? Can you tell us how to prepare item 1? (for the items she mentions, pick one item and ask her to illustrate how to prepare that item)
  • What could you do if you think my child need to be scolded and punished?

(A) FOR EXPERIENCED MAID

  • What do you do in your previous employer's house? (To know her experience in details)
  • How many people are there in your previous employer's house and who are they? (to check whether she has the skill to take care of baby or elderly)
  • What will you do if my child crys non-stop and I am not around? (You can give her a few situations like this to answer. It can show whether she is really experienced in handling baby.)
  • How to make baby sleep at night? (Same as point 3)

(B)FOR NEW MAID

  • Do you need to do housework at home? (If she has never do any housework before, I do not think she is qualified to work as a domestic helper)

Her Job and Duty (Your House Conditions) - Interview a Maid

(It is good to let maid know what she can be expected. If she shows some unpleasant mood when you mention certain duty or job, better avoid that maid)
  • I have one baby who is 4 months old and she will wake up once at midnight and you will need to feed her.
  • Currently I have 5 people in the house and four months later, we are going to have one more kid. Will the duty be too heavy for you?
  • I need you to wake up at six in the morning to prepare breakfast for my kid? Is 6am too early for you?

Concerns that maid may need to go back home before the expiration of contract

  • Do you have sibling? Where are they? (Sometimes, if their parents fall sick and she is the only child, she may need to return home to take care of parents)
  • Do you have boy friend, when do you plan to get married? (if within 2 years, then the maid may need to go back for marriage)
  • What are you most concerned/worried about back home ?

Many maids run away because of poor communication with employer. It is good to have a maid that can tell you that she needs help or face problem. As a employer, you should try to help out whenever possible, this can avoid the lose-lose situation where the maid runs away and hide at some charities.
  • What would you do if you are not happy with us?
  • What do you expect from us?
  • What would you do if you think you have too many things to handle?

When to Take Pregnancy Test and How

PREGNANCY TEST METHOD

Other than following the instructions on the manual that comes together with the pregnancy test paper, you should carry out the pregnancy test at least seven days after sex or on the day when your menstruation is due. If you carry out the pregnancy test too early, the test result will not be accurate and you just waste you pregnancy test kit.
Normally the instruction manual will teach you how to dip the kit or paper into the urine sample and how long you should wait before checking the pregnancy test result. You must strictly follow as instructed. If you forget to check pregnancy test result on time, what you see may not be reliable.

PREGNANCY TEST RESULT RELIABILITY

Typically, urine sample plays a part in the reliability of the pregnancy test. The first urine after you wake up in the morning is most suitable for this test, the result obtained will be more reliable. The water or fluid you drink may dilute the level of HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) in the urine and may make the pregnancy test result unreliable.

WHAT TO DO AFTER PREGNANCY TEST?

Once pregnancy test paper indicates that you are pregnant, it is recommended that you do a confirmation check at the gynecological clinic or hospital. There, you can also ask the gynaecologist to perform the other necessary related health check.

Baby Care Product Promotion in Singapore

Order of Appearance of Teeth for Baby

For many babies, first tooth may appear around six months of age and is usually the lower central incisor. By the time she or he reaches 24 to 30 months old, she or he should have all 20 teeth. A general formula can be used to calculate the number of teeth your baby should have is:
no of teeth = age of the baby (in months) - (4 or 6).
Once the teeth start to appear, they will usually come at a rate of 1 per month and follow a certain order:
1. Two lower central incisors will appear first, followed by the two upper incisors when the baby is about 8 months of old.
2. The four sides incisors will appear by the time the baby is about 1 year old.
3. Four back molars or chewing teeth will appear when the baby is about 14 months old.
4. Four canines (pointed teeth) will appear when the baby reaches 20 months old.
5. Four more back molars appear between 24 months to 30 months.
Take note that the above information is only the average time of appearance of teeth. It is normal to see babies with teeth at the age of 2 months and or no tooth at the age of 10 months. However, parents are advised to bring their children to dentist if the concerned child still does not have any teeth after 1 year old.
