No doubt, breast milk is the best nutrition for babies. No matter how technology advances, nutrition content of formula milk cannot match that of breast milk. Of course, another major benefit of breast milk is it helps family to save lots of money, especially true in Singapore where formula milk is probably the most expensive one in the world.
For some reasons, some babies needs the formula milk. Some young mothers may not be able to produce enough milk for their babies so they have no choice. Some babies need the formula milk because their mothers simply do not want to breastfeed.
There are about 10 brands of formula milk in Singapore, offering enough choice for young family. These ten brands include all major players in the world like Abbott, Friso, Meadjohnson, Nestle, Wyeth, Karihome, Aptamil, Lactogen, Belly and Dumex. Aptamil is a new player in the market.
There are also several varieties of formula milk like soy based formula milk, goat milk based formula milk like Karihome. Of course, majority are cow milk based.
Manufacturers or online retailers are not allowed to market stage 1 or sell it online. This is an initiative by some government-related organisation to promote breastfeeding. However, I personally feel that they should not ban it online. In the past, Internet may be seen as a channel of marketing, but nowadays, it is actually a channel of distribution, no different from supermarket.
Baby milk powder sold in Singapore is probably the most expensive one in the world and the price is still increasing.
For 100grams of stage 3 formula, the cost of the each brand can be seen below:
Abbott Similac: 5.06 per 100 grams
Meadjohnson: 5.03 per 100 grams
Dumex: 4.69 per 100 grams
Wyeth S26: 4.93 per 100 grams
Nestle:4.825 per 100 grams
Aptamil: 4.79 per 100 grams
As can be seen, Abbott Similac is the most expensive one while Dumex is the cheapest one.
In the past, China used to a country where foreign brand formula milk is the most expensive one for major brand like Abbott, Meadjohnson, now this title most probably transfers to Singapore. Formula milk powder sold here is at least 40% more expensive than the neighboring countries like Malaysia. This is the reason why many parents takes the trouble to travel to Malaysia to buy formula milk.
Maybe because of this high price, website http://www.babyment.com has setup a dedicate section to share promotion of baby milk powder in Singapore. You can visit them for more details
